Some time in the spring of last year, I decided to travel in South America. I had finished high school and wanted to see a bit of the world. I don't remember why exactly South America, perhaps because it is not so common to travel in South America. I started planning my trip and I had to decide a place to fly from Europe. The flights to Medellin were the cheapest, so Medellin and Colombia were the beginning of my trip. After Colombia, I plan to fly to Bolivia, Argentina and finally Brazil, where I will return to Switzerland. Here is a little about me and my journey. For two weeks, I was the volunteer of Manuel and Laura, where I helped Manuel with his ship and his business. I found this volunteer opportunity on the workaway.com platform. My tasks were multifaceted and included cleaning, housework and, most importantly, helping with the returns of the sunset. The sunsets were the main part of my voluntary assistance and also the part that I liked the most. It's just incredibly beautiful to watch the sunsets on the boat. Certainly, I have to serve the clients and I help Manuel and Steven with the preparation of the ship, but those things are more than compensated for by the sunsets. Whilst I was Manuel's volunteer, I had my own room in Manuel's apartment and I lived with his family. Manuel's home is very lively with many friends invited over and family invited from Manuel and Laura. For me, it was the first time in a Colombian house and it was very interesting and served the purpose of cultural exchange. Experiencing Colombia this way is very different from the experience of Colombia in hostels and tourist places. I felt more immersed in the culture and it felt more real than the tourist places. It was surely an experience that I will never forget and that I recommend to everyone!
